What Geofence Manager Does

Geofence Manager lets you define an alert zone around each shipment stop. Chain then uses those zones to improve stop event accuracy (especially arrival/departure timing).

You can create:

  • Radius zones (a circle around the stop)

  • Polygon zones (a custom shape around the stop)

Where To Find It

Geofence Manager is available in the protected shipment tracking map inside the shipment details experience.

It is not available in:

  • public tracking pages

  • embedded tracking maps

Before You Start

  • Open a shipment that has at least one stop.

  • Go to the shipment's Tracking section.

  • On the map, click the Geofence button.

When you click Geofence, the map enters a geofence editing mode.

How To Create A Geofence

1) Select a stop

  • In the Geofence panel, click a stop card.

  • The selected stop is highlighted on the map.

2) Choose zone shape

  • Radius for quick setup

  • Polygon for exact boundary control

3) Build the zone

Radius

  • Move the radius slider.

  • The zone preview updates immediately.

  • Radius updates auto-save shortly after you stop moving the slider.

Polygon

  • Click Draw Polygon.

  • Click on the map to place points.

  • Click the first point again to close the shape.

  • Polygon saves when the shape is closed.

4) Confirm save status

You will see status labels in the stop card controls. These labels show whether your geofence change was actually applied:

  • Saving...

    • Your create/update/remove request is currently being sent.

  • Saved

    • Your geofence change was successfully saved.

  • Failed to save

    • The save request failed (for example: network issue or validation issue). Retry the action.

  • Zone removed

    • The geofence was successfully removed from that stop.

How To Edit Or Remove A Zone

  • Select the stop in the panel.

  • To edit:

    • Radius: move the slider again

    • Polygon: click Redraw

  • To remove: click Remove Zone

How Stop Status Timing Works

Chain uses geofence and appointment timing together to reduce false arrivals and improve event quality.

Appointment time logic

  • A truck is not marked Arrived just because it is inside the zone.

  • Arrived is marked when the truck is inside the arrival area and within the appointment window.

  • Arrival window rule:

    • from 30 minutes before appointment time through any time after the appointment time.

  • If the truck is inside the zone earlier than that window, the stop is treated as Nearby instead of Arrived.

  • For the first stop, geofence updates are typically processed as the appointment gets closer (about a 4-hour window) to avoid noisy early events.

How Nearby, Arrived, and Departed work when geofence is added

Status progression is generally:

  • Pending -> Nearby -> Arrived -> Departed

With a geofence:

  • Nearby means the truck is near the stop/geofence but not ready to be marked arrived yet.

  • Arrived means the truck is inside the configured zone and within appointment timing rules.

  • Departed means the truck was arrived and then left the departure boundary.

  • Once a stop becomes Departed, it stays departed.

Zone-specific behavior:

  • Radius geofence

    • Arrival boundary uses your configured radius.

    • Departure boundary scales larger than the arrival radius (roughly 2x).

  • Polygon geofence

    • Arrived when inside the polygon and within appointment timing rules.

    • Departed when it leaves the polygon after arrival.

What happens when geofence is not added (default behavior)

If no geofence is configured, Chain uses default circular distance rules around the stop coordinates:

  • Nearby: within 10 miles

  • Arrived: within 1 mile and within appointment timing rules

  • Departed: after arrival, beyond 2 miles

These defaults apply automatically until a custom radius or polygon is saved.

Tips

  • Use Radius when a simple circle is enough.

  • Use Polygon for complex facilities or large yards.

  • Keep zone boundaries realistic to avoid noisy events.

Quick Troubleshooting

  • No Geofence button

    • Confirm you are in the protected shipment tracking map (not public/embed).

  • Cannot draw polygon

    • You need at least 3 points, then click the first point to close.

  • Zone did not save

    • Check for Failed to save, then retry.

  • Truck is in the zone but still shows Nearby

    • This is usually because it is still earlier than the 30-minute appointment arrival window.

  • Zone looks wrong

    • Redraw the polygon or adjust radius and save again.

FAQ

I do not see the Geofence button

Make sure you are in the protected shipment tracking view (not a public tracking page).

Polygon drawing is not finishing

You need at least 3 points, then click near the first point to close the shape.

My zone did not save

If you see Failed to save, retry after a few seconds. If it keeps failing, contact support with shipment and stop details.

Can I remove a zone later?

Yes. Open Geofence mode, select the stop, and click Remove Zone.
