Verify a driver's identity on a shipment

Confirm the driver picking up your load is who they say they are. Driver identity verification is currently in beta and free for every workspace.

πŸŽ‰ Premium feature β€” free during beta. Driver identity verification is a paid feature. While we're rolling it out, every workspace can verify drivers at no cost. During beta, each driver can be verified once.

What is driver identity verification?

Driver identity verification is a real-time identity check that confirms the driver picking up your load is who they say they are. It's designed to reduce fraud and double-brokering risk on the loads you tender.

When you request verification on a shipment, the assigned driver is prompted in the driver app to submit their driver's license and a live selfie. The selfie is matched against the photo on the license, and the result is returned in your shipment view within a few minutes.

What gets verified during beta

  • Government-issued driver's license β€” only a valid driver's license is accepted during beta (passports and other IDs are not currently supported).

  • Live selfie β€” a real-time selfie that's matched against the photo on the driver's license.

Coming soon

We're expanding the document types that workspaces can require. The following are visible in your settings as "coming soon" and will be enabled after beta:

  • Cab card

  • Truck VIN

  • Truck license plate

  • Trailer license plate

  • On-site location confirmation

How to enable driver verification for your workspace

Workspace admins and owners can configure driver verification under Settings β†’ Driver Verification.

  1. Open Settings in the left sidebar and choose Driver Verification (look for the Beta tag).

  2. Toggle Enable driver verification on.

  3. Under Default verification steps, choose which documents are required for every shipment. During beta, only Government ID (driver's license) and Live Selfie are available.

  4. Optionally, expand Load classification overrides to require additional steps for high-value, hazmat, or commodity-specific loads.

  5. Click Save changes.

How to verify a driver on a shipment

Once driver verification is enabled, you can request verification from a driver assigned to any of your shipments.

  1. Open the shipment and scroll to the driver section.

  2. Click the Verify driver button next to the assigned driver.

  3. In the verification dialog, click Request verification. The driver receives a push notification and an in-app prompt to complete the flow.

  4. Track progress in the same dialog. Each attempt and its status appear in the verification history table. If the driver doesn't respond, you can send a reminder (up to 3 reminders per attempt).

What the driver sees

When you request verification, the assigned driver is prompted in the Chain driver app to:

  1. Open the verification request from their inbox or push notification.

  2. Take a clear photo of the front and back of their driver's license.

  3. Take a live selfie when prompted (the camera guides them through positioning).

  4. Submit. Results are returned to the broker in real time.

Verification statuses

  • Requested β€” the verification has been sent to the driver, but has not yet started.

  • In progress β€” the driver opened the flow and is submitting documents.

  • Completed β€” the driver passed all required checks. A green "Driver verified" badge appears on the shipment.

  • Failed β€” one or more documents didn't pass. You can request a new verification.

  • Expired β€” the driver did not complete the flow before the request expired. You can request a new verification.

  • Canceled β€” the request was canceled by an admin or the driver.

Beta limitations

  • One verification per driver during beta. Once a driver has a Completed verification on file, the Verify / Re-request buttons are disabled. The history dialog explains this when it applies.

  • Driver's license only. Other government IDs (passports, etc.) are not currently accepted.

  • Selfie required. The live selfie cannot be skipped β€” it's how we confirm the driver matches the document.

  • Verification cost is on us during beta. We'll share pricing details before exiting beta.

FAQ

What happens if a driver fails verification?
The shipment shows a Failed status. You can review the failure reason in the history dialog and request a fresh verification β€” failed and expired attempts don't count toward the beta one-verification limit.

How long does the verification link stay valid?
The driver has a limited window to complete the flow before the request expires. If a request expires before the driver finishes, you can request a new one.

What if I need to re-verify a driver during beta?
Beta caps each driver to one completed verification. If you have a legitimate need to re-verify a driver who is already verified, contact support during beta, and we'll help.

Is this the same as "Verification on Chain"?
No. Verification on Chain is the company-level FMCSA email verification that gives carriers the blue verified icon. Driver identity verification is a separate, per-driver, per-shipment check that confirms the actual driver picking up your load.
